I grew up in the highly populated city in Japan, where space for homes is limited, placing people closely together. It is rather a stressful society, but there are some benefits to the crowded conditions. People tend to carefully follow a complex system of acceptable social habits, which are passed down from their ancestors and serve to keep cramped conditions orderly and bearable.

I am strongly attracted to the traditional Japanese patterns used on common textiles. The various designs are constructed in a tidy and systematic way that reminds me of the complex Japanese way of life. Japanese people's general sober personality and their ridged life style clearly appear on organized patterns. These unique patterns often employ familiar things in geometric designs. To comfort their stressful life, people have sought things such as flowers, birds, insects, turtles, basket weaving, and water in a colorful manner.

In my recent pottery work, I have been using slips to create patterns, while I am questioning myself how much my own personality reflects in the traces. I am interested in crafting pottery, which can introduce to viewers outstanding Japanese traditional designs as well as in delivering a sense of peace and contentment to users.
